Letter from G. W. Goodner to W. J. Goodner.
Harristown, Illinois.Ê January 5th, 1862.
Dear Brother,
I seat myself this night to let you know that I am still alive and blest with a reasonable portion of health.Ê We have had a beautiful fall and winter so far.Ê We had a tolerable good snow the Saturday night before Christmas which went off on Chri
stmas night.Ê We have sleet and snow on the ground now.Ê The atmosphere is mild and roads elegant.Ê I have got my corn all gathered.Ê I have about 2200 bushels of that article, which I suppose I will have to keep till next spring or summer.Ê I ha
d about 700 bushels of wheat, apart of which I have on hand yet.
I sowed about 25 acres of wheat last fall, which is doing well so far, besides that there is about 60 acres more in wheat on my farm.Ê Produce of every kind except wheat is hardly worth hauling to market and wheat is only worth 60 cts per bushel.
Ê I donÕt know whether I will farm next season or not.Ê Our Prairie is improving finely notwithstanding the hard times.
Dan'l Stookey has got lumber on his farm for house building.Ê I paid them a visit in October.Ê They are all well and seemed to be doing well.Ê I get letters from J. H. & Salinda Lacey occasionally.Ê They have a son which they call Elmer Ellsworth.
Jordan Burkey was married on New Years day to a Miss Haunsley an English girl, and Horatio Eyman to a Miss Salina Miler, thus you see old Bachelors can marry in war times.Ê This goes to prove that I could many if I would, but I donÕt think it righ
t to take advantage of our soldier boys that way.
I need not tell you that times are very hard here for that you know as a matter of course.Ê I fear for the future.Ê My pen is so poor that I believe I will close for the present.Ê Give my compliments to Lizzie Whittleton, Janetta and the friends g
enerally.Ê I donÕt know when I will visit you.Ê I would like to do so very much.Ê Please write me a letter when you can make it convenient.Ê I believe this will be the second that I have sent you since I received one from you, at any rate it has b
een a long time since I heard from you.
I remain your affectionate brother.
G. W. Goodner
